Some years ago i bought my husband a metal detector from Radio Shack. Until now we have not been able to use it due to time restrictions. We took it to the local park today and although we picked up a few signals it did seem as though we were tracking underground cables more than anything else. Is there any way to eliminate this type of signal? We did try different modes, but it didn't seem to make any difference.
We are really looking forward to having fun with this hobby and can't wait for our first true find! Any advise would be very helpful. Thank you.

Without knowing the specific capabilities of your machine, all I can offer is this piece of general advice: as with any metal detector, you'll just have to dig every signal until you learn what they indicate.
If you are able to discriminate out certain signals, that can be useful in avoiding digging some trash, but can also cause you to miss valuable items that fall within the same signal range. Also, if your detector has pinpointing capability, that can be used to get an indication as to the size or length of an object in the ground, letting you avoid underground cables or pipes.
Good luck!
