COIN BELT BUCKLE

[/img]

MD'd this belt buckle recently. My question is: Is it worthwhile keeping it intact or removing the coins? It's got 4 Buffalo Nickels, 4 Liberty Dimes, 2 Standing Liberty Halves set in a frame of Silver and soldered together. Back says "The Great American Buckle Co.", "Copyright 1983", "Serial Number 1038", and "Made in the U.S.A."

Only date visible is on SL and it reads 1943.

Thanks for suggestions.

Way to go Rocky you found another cache , well so to speak .I would polish it up and keep as is . Awesome find .

Nice catch .... I agree with keeping it intact ...

thanks

I appreciate your answers... guess I'll have to spend some time polishing... I'll look up what MDAC has to say on the subject of how to clean coins without damaging them... that's what's so great about this site!

Rocky, I don't mean to rain on your parade, but are you sure the coins are real?  They look like they are cast and possibly silver plated.  Look at the edges of the two SL Halves and the back of the buckle.

Hey Duane:
I think you might be right--I'm taking it down to my jeweler and let him have a look and test it.
I'll get back to you Crying or Very sad

Nonetheless, it is still a really cool belt buckle.  I'd like to have it! Very Happy

Duane:
Well, you were right! It's high-grade silver. He wants to melt it and pay me the weight. I decided to keep it as is and let it go at that! I'm not the least bit disappointed... This turned out to be a CASH/NO-CACHE situation!
Thanks Duane.

That's great, Rocky.  That's one big chunk of silver, but I'm like you, I'd keep it as a belt buckle too. Congrats on a great find.

Hey Henry!
You might be right! I don't spend nearly as much time looking in the mirror now as i used to... I remember combing my hair took 20-30 minutes because the front curl didn't fall just so and the duck-tail didn't overlap properly!
Now I am happy if my wrinkles disappear by 10:30 in the morning!
Hi-Yo Silver!
