MD'ing StoryHowdy folks,
I've just got to tell this MD'ing story. I wanted to go hunting yesterday afternoon and didn't have anyone to go with so I called my father in law and asked him to go. Earlier this week I presented him with a fairly new Bounty Hunter 202 that I had bought specifically for him. He likes to MD but only on occaision and not for long. He's 76 years old, fairly active and in pretty decent shape. Anyway we drove to a spot that I've been working on to clean the top level of trash from and started detecting. By the way, my father law is named Boyce. Well, we sorta hunted in a grid manner but on a large scale and he found a memorial penny at about 6 inches and a clad quarter at 4 in. You'd have thought he'd found a cash of coins! He was tickled pink that his "new" machine was finding coins for him. Well, we hunted all the way down to the end of the grid and turned around and started hunting back towards where my van was parked, moving in about 5 ft to the grid center side by side. I was swinging my machine and digging every signal. I've read that it is best to do this and will eventually allow me to get to the good stuff. Well, we got about halfway back up the yard and I heard Boyce's machine ping and real good double signal. I asked him what his machine was saying it was and he said it was saying a dime at 4 inches. I told him that was an excellent signal and he should dig it, so he did. Son of a gun! He pulled a beatiful heavy 925 Silver ring with an 18k gold trim around the stone. He put it in his pouch and I told him to be sure and recheck his hole . Dang it ! He did and pulled another big 925 silver ring trimed in 18k gold! 2 nice rings out of the same hole!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been to this site on 2 previous visits and worked the area hard and never got a signal there. Needless to say my father in law is "hooked" on his new machine and by the way that Bounty Hunter and 76 year old man flat KICKED my butt today! All I found was three memorial pennies and 1 1941 wheat cent! Dang it!
I will say this, I learned something about my own machine today. The wheatie was the last hole I dug. After Boyce found the rings I became desperate and hunted back towards the my van then turned and headed back into the grid area again. I was just about to give up when I got a real light wispey signal. Ever so slight. I could get the signal in all ways...up and down and cross ways, etc. The problem was that my machine was telling me that the coin was at least 10 inches deep. I thought crap, if I dig another piece of trash after all this, I'm gonna be ticked. Anyway, I started digging. Got down to 6 in and nothing with the pro-pointer. I hit it with the md'r and it said a coin was there at 8 in. So I dug deeper. I got down between 8-10 inches and pin pointed and there was something there. Hmmm, I reached way down in the hole to the bottom and loose dirt and felt the coin. Pulled it out, wiped it off and there was the wheatie. What did I learn? Deep coins may make a slight wispy signal but it will be consistent.
Anyway, it was good to see my father in law excited about md'ing. He was as excited as a 3 year old kid and it was good to see him find something worth his while. I did tell him I wasn't taking him with me anymore and that now he's on his own. He said in that case, I could find somwhere else to eat Sunday lunch! Dangit! I sure do like them Sunday lunches.
Just wanted to share this with my md'ing friends. Be sure to check out Boyce's rings below.
Take care,
Curt aka KingsMtnMan

Curt, they are not "nice rings" they're "REAL NICE RINGS!!" Way to go to Boyce. I would have to say he did kick your butt a little
Thanks for the story I really enjoyed it and you hit on a good point that most good coin signal will be repeatably when you go over them again and again. Trash tends to jump around or start on a high reading and drop down on successive swings.
See you tommorrow?

Great story Curt...... The deep target whispy signal is all the more reason to get really good headphones. At least 150ohm's.
