newbie has a detector!Well we did it!! We are the proud owners of a ML, xterra 705. It came with 2 coils, 9" search(7.5khz) and 5x10" double d(18.75khz). So far only used the 9" We found an old axe head 8" below surface. And lots of cans and a 2008 quarter just below surface. We live in the Winston area, but would love to come down on a weekend field trip if you have any soon. Please respond with some dates so we can join ya'll. We need guidance-ha,ha! We would love to talk with another Minelab xterra owner. Lots of numbers on our detectores screen that I have questions about that a user would understand.

Hi Laurie,
Congrads on the new detector. The Xterra 70 is a good machine. We have a club hunt the first Sat. of the month if one of our members steps forward with a location. If not we don't hunt..
A good shovel is the Little Eagle 5o by Lesche tools AKA Predator Tools one of our sponsors. If the shovel is too light weight you will not have the back bone for going into the ground and it will bend and flex. Also the LE-50 has the weight and the sharpness to cut through small roots and you can pry up houses with it. I have 3 Predator shovels and two hand diggers. The hand diggers are good when your doing small or fine work after you have opened the hole and don't want the big shovel in there anymore to get a small target out of the hole. I would put in the links now but my job considers Predator tools as weapons and it's forbidden LOL
I'll put up the links later from home

Thanks, CJ. Went to the predator site-the tools look like what I need. We may be able to make the May 2nd hunt if you all have one, just let us know.

Well congrats on the 705! i hope you have great luck with it!
This is the shovel model I use. I am 6'3" so needed the longer handle.

Well congrats on the 705! I hope you have great luck with it! As for the type of digging tool, I would suggest looking and handling a few before buying, just to get a feel for what you would prefer. Go to a hobby shop that carries the Lesche or Predator brand. If you go on line, I like dealing with the Predator group best, a lot friendlier people.

Well we got a little eagle and I plan to try it out on Fri. with a friend. Anything has to be better than the spade I am currently using. I am learning alot as I go! We found some pocket change at a little park this weekend and it was much more rewarding than digging up plowshares in the vacant land near our home. I now know what rusted large ferrous items look like to my MD and will be much more judicious about digging them up!

Large ferrous lumpsLaurie:
Just be really cognizant of the fact that caches have the same look as lumps of ferrous material on the MD! The one I found last year could just as easily have been a horseshoe, but it was silver dollars and a couple of gold coins... you never know!

Dig, dig, search, search, grin, grin.
