Rookie MD from Mint Hill

Good morning everyone.  My name is Ed and I live in Mint Hill.  I have enjoyed reading the forum and decided to join this morning.  I am new to MD and look forward to starting a new hobby and learning from those with experience.  My wife and I have always been facinated with "Buried Treasure" and we finally decided that we would try metal detecting to see what could be found.  We plan to search on land as well as in the water (fresh & salt).  We currently don't have any metal detectors and I'm leaning toward the Whites M6 model to start with.  I have also thought about a Garrett 250 for the wife.  Look forward to attending some of your meetings in the future.

Hey Ed!

Welcome to the MDAC Forum.  There are tons of nice and knowledgeable people on here.

The M6 is a great machine.  Plenty of aftermarket coils for each hunting condition.  I've heard it also does great on the Salty Beaches!

Once again, Welcome!

Welcome to the MDAC forum.  We hope to see you at our next meeting.  I would be more than happy to go over the different types of detectors and their options in an effort to help you find the right machine for both you and your wife the first time.

Too often new detectorists buy a machine soley on what others tell them rather than what options they are interested in.  Not trying to scare you, just inform you.  Simple questons include what do you want to find (relics, gold, coins a little bit of everything?) where will you use the detector (NC, SC, dry land only, dry land and dry sand beach, wet sand, in the water) and of course your budget.

From there we can evaluate what features are important to you.

PM or email me or track me down at the meeting on the 8th.  We are ALL here to help!

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. I'm really looking forward to getting into this hobby, enjoying the outdoors and meeting new friends. One of the toughest things about starting a new hobby is knowing and understanding the equipment that is needed to make it enjoyable.  Forums like this one provide helpful information and opinions that make the equipment selection a lot easier.  I have not made any firm decisions on the type of MD equipment that I'll purchase yet.  I'm leaning toward a White's M6 or MXT unit that could be used on land or water.  Most of the detecting I plan to do would be land based.  I do have an interest in Civil War relics and would like to pursue this in the future once I gain more experience with the equipment.  For right know, I'll be happy with finding anything.  If anybody has used mid range detectors for sale I may be interested.

Welcome aboard Ed:

This is a great hobby you have gotten interested in, and it's a good hobby for the family too. Like all have said, anything we can help you or your wife with, just let someone know.

As for as not having a detector; I would like to invite you and your wife to one of our hunts. I have several detectors and would be glad to lend you one. Many of our members have multiple units they carry and any of them would let you try them out.

The most important thing to remember, it to have fun. Laughing

I am going tomorrow to look at a used (still in the box) White's MXT.  This unit appears to fit my needs and hopefully it will be a nice one.  I'll keep you posted.

After a lot of reading, reviewing and checking the forums for metal detector recommendations I decided to go with the White's MXT.  It appears to fit my needs and offers three different detector settings for coins, relics and prospecting.  I'm not sure which area will be my main focus, guess it depends on what I find with it.  I was able to locate a used (new in box never assembled) MXT locally and picked it up on Friday morning.  I set out searching for treasure in my back yard and came up with junk, junk and more junk. Did find five 1970's pennies, old equipment tag and some dinkie metal cars.  Most of the finds were 6-8 inches deep.  It will take a while to get adjusted to the MXT settings and determine what should be dug up.

Just remember once you get the junk out of the way, the only thing left is treasure!

Congrats on the MXT purchase.  We have a few MXT users in the club that would be more than happy to help you along.

Of course any club member is always willing to help....

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome at last nights meeting.  I enjoyed seeing the group and look forward to participating in future events with the club.  The coin presentation was very informative.
