SHAME

I got out with friends for a couple of hours of detecting last Sunday. We knew immediately when we got out of the car that someone else had detected there. What tipped us off? It was the open holes some were quite deep and wide with the dirt piled up next to them. Lots of holes, and also next to the open holes was the piece of trash they had dug up and thrown down on the ground next to the hole. I was mad as hell and ashamed all at he same time as I kicked the dirt back into the hole. When you see this you don’t have to wonder for long why non detecting people see us as grave robbers, vultures and thieves. Some of the holes had the dirt poorly kicked back in but they threw the dug trash back in as well.
We are all ambassadors of this hobby and need to teach the right behavior for detecting and have the guts to stand up and tell the bad people what they’re doing is not right, un-acceptable and incredible “Un-Cool”. If I find out the name of anyone doing this type of detecting I will post it here for all to see. This needs to stop.

PS: Ground clothes are very cool !

Charlie,

I really hate that you had to go through this.  I have been through it as well.  Especially here downtown Columbia, SC.  There are some nice parks here but when you immediately see scars and holes on the ground from nimrod detectorists, it makes you think again about our hobby.

Imagine what people outside of the hobby think about it?!

Everyone keep your eyes peeled to the Research and Recovery web site and YouTube channel.  I am in the works of doing some Detecting Public Service Announcements to help PROMOTE the hobby and not DEMOTE it.

I know what you mean CJ.  I posted on Tnet about it, too.

Ian, let us know if you need any help with your videos.

Absolutely ridiculous, and I hate to hear it.  I've seen this before too.  It's embarrassing to suffer by association to those types.  Common sense alone should dictate to people that making our environment unsightly is just a dumb idea for many reasons.

Due to a need for a job search and a possiblity in Maryland, I found this permit instruction form for detecting in Baltimore.

$25 per year for a permit after you get certified from a club in the area.

Let's hope this area doesn't get to that point.

Interesting, John.  Thanks for the info and, like you, I hope it doesn't come to that here.  If it ever does, though, it looks like we may have the opportunity to be a partcipating authority.

I totally agree, we need to head stuff this off and make it know to the detecting community.
